An external USB drive *should* be recognized in the BIOS, but it might be labelled as USB floppy or similar - definitely keep trying to boot from it once you know Linux Mint (or any other linux) are not programs, they are operating systems, like Windows 7 is. the program might not let u load up the ISO cuz maybe u didnt buy it or who knows. As long as you know the drive is good, you can save a lot of time by doing a quick format.
