I think partition magic software will do it much easily. I can watch the movies on it on my laptop but not on a dvd player through usb port. It was so easy and now my son-in-law's computer works great. And very fast! - How come it is so swift? Source
The only way to format a drive/partition with the Windows disc is to also install Windows on it. Really helped me out a lot! I think you will eventually be able to get the info off-one way or another.

Hmmm…that pretty much cuts out ALL modern external hard drives! If you're on Windows 8.1, you will be 'refreshed' to Window 8.
