Kudos to your friend! remove or replace single components like RAM modules and boot the computer without them. I had the problem on a laptop and got a Fix from HP. free fans and power supply from dust.
Not sure if using more power makes a difference since sometimes it won't happen for 3 days and other times it happens in 10 minutes.
